RFL release statement over Wigan Warriors-Leigh Leopards ticket row

Derek Beaumont

The RFL have released a statement confirming that an independent review will take place to investigate the ticket allocation drama prior to Wigan Warriors’ and Leigh Leopards’ semi-final match.

In what should have been a week of build-up to two of the best teams in the league preparing to do battle for a place in the Grand Final, the preview of the on-field action was tainted, starting with Wigan releasing a statement on Wednesday morning, suggesting that Leigh owner Derek Beaumont had plans to pull his side out of Friday’s play-off semi-final due to a ticketing dispute.

Then, late into Wednesday evening, Beaumont released a lengthy statement of his own to give his version of events, with the Leigh owner labelling Wigan’s statement inaccurate, while outlining his concern about tickets bought by Leigh fans being cancelled by the Warriors.

Beaumont also outlined potential safety concerns that he has raised with Rugby League Commercial chief Rhodri Jones, after picking up whispers of ‘bricking the Brick’ and fan plans to rush the turnstiles.

Now, the RFL have finally had their say on the matter, after no communication from them while the debacle was ongoing. They have released a statement containing comments from Nigel Wood OBE, chair of Rugby League Commercial. He confirmed an investigation into the proceedings will take place.

Wood’s comments from the statement read:

“Congratulations to both Wigan Warriors and Leigh Leopards on their performances last night, and congratulations to the Warriors for qualifying for their third Grand Final in a row.

“The build up to last night’s game was unprecedented, and has highlighted learnings for the future, which an independent panel will review following this weekend’s fixtures.

“The play-offs have not let us down with terrific performances and entertainment as always. I am looking forward to tonight’s second Betfred Super League Men’s Semi-Final – best wishes to Hull KR and St Helens.”

Out of touch, cloud cuckoo land stuff from the RFL. No change there then.

Another RFL fence built to sit on. Heaven forfend there should be any criticism aimed at anyone, like, say, comments about a rumour for “bricking the brick”? Not at all likely to give anyone ideas. Regardless of it’s origin, it’s the sort of rumour to inform the police, not post on the internet.
Thankfully, the fans had more sense.
