RFL launch Bank Holiday charity round bookended by Wigan Warriors v Hull KR and 1895 Cup final

The Rugby Football League have announced that a sport-wide Charity Round will be held on the August Bank Holiday weekend, kicking off with Wigan Warriors versus Hull KR before ending with the 1895 Cup Final.

Held from August 27th to the 31st, the dates coincide with the anniversary of the Northern Union breakaway in 1895, a significant moment in the history of rugby league.

As such, the 1895 Cup Final will be held on the Bank Holiday Monday to end the charity round with funds raised supporting the recently renamed Seriously Injured Players Fund.

Seven men’s Super League fixtures, four women’s Super League fixtures, a full round of Championship games, plus the 1895 Cup game, will be played over the round as part of the new initiative launched by the RFL, Rugby League Cares and Rugby League Commercial.

A statement confirmed: “This coincides with the launch by RL Cares of the Seriously Injured Players Fund, a new name for the Rugby League Benevolent Fund – which has been rebranded 21 years after its foundation in 2005, in response to the injuries suffered by Danny Scott and the late Matt King OBE.”

Why Charity Round is being launched

Speaking on the decision to create the new Charity Round, Francis Stephenson, former England forward and the general manager of the Benevolent Fund which has since been relaunched, praised the initiative.

He said: “It will be a first for Rugby League to have the whole sport coming together knowing that all the money we raise will be in aid of seriously injured players and their families.

“We wanted to remove that confusion with a new title and brand for the charity which leaves no doubt about its purpose – fans will know when they support the Charity Round, or the Seriously Injured Players Fund in any other way, their money will go directly to enhancing the lives of those players and their families.”

RL Commercial’s Rhodri Jones added: “We are delighted to confirm a sport wide Charity Round across the August Bank Holiday weekend, which represents the very best of the Rugby League community coming together for a greater purpose.”
