The annual Rugby Football League fan survey was recently released and it’s seen a couple of major ideas touted for the future.
Large parts of the survey look back at the 2025 season across a number of competitions from Super League to the community game with fans asked about their enjoyment of each competition, as well as the quality and competitiveness of those comps and whether they were more or less exciting than prior years.
Beyond that, there were a number of questions that may hint to what the RFL could introduce in the future with interest gauged on a number of big ideas.
It is worth noting that sometimes in surveys, questions can be asked as filler with surveyors being particularly keen on one specific answer, meaning that not necessarily all of the things that were being asked about are being considered.
That said, there were still some very interesting ideas with a standout one being the possibility of summer Super League matches being played on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday evenings.
Rugby Football League survey poses key Super League questions
Specifically, that question read: “If Betfred Super League matches were scheduled on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday evenings during July and August, on which of these days would you be willing to attend?”
In England, the school summer holidays cover parts of July and all of August and that has seen tournaments such as cricket’s The Hundred capitalise by playing games throughout weekday evenings.
Other possible new concepts included 9’s club fixtures and/or a tournament or stand-alone event, as well as the prospect of a return for the War of the Roses.
Fans were asked if they would like to see a ‘new Men’s regional competition or Origin/War of the Roses reintroduced’, a topic that has often split opinion.
Opinions on future Magic Weekend destinations were also asked of, as well as a question on whether fans would want to see ‘regular Super League fixtures played at bigger, neutral venues’.
This year will see Wigan Warriors and Catalans Dragons face off in Paris as part of the 30th anniversary of Super League plans, whilst Wigan have previously taken games to the Nou Camp as well.
The survey, which can be found here and takes just five minutes to complete, concluded by inviting fans to share their thoughts on the biggest challenge facing the sport.
