Released Warrington Wolves man talks Championship debut with ‘cobwebs’ admission

Ex-Warrington Wolves prop Zane Musgrove on the sidelines

Released Warrington Wolves forward Zane Musgrove made his debut for Championship side Oldham over the weekend, just two days after his move from the Super League side.

Musgrove left the Wolves in search of more consistent game time, having only featured in seven of their league games this season, and opted to join the Championship club.

The 29-year-old came off the bench to feature in Oldham’s 34-10 victory over Halifax Panthers on Sunday afternoon.

Musgrove was also awarded the player of the match trophy by his new supporters, and fellow debutant Mathieu Pons was awarded the same award from the club’s sponsors.

Speaking to the club’s media, he said: “It was a really good performance from the boys, playing against Halifax.

“They’re a tough team. I don’t know too much about the competition, but they’ve got a pretty stacked side.

“It was good for me to just get out and play some footy and enjoy it. It was good to get the win.”

Former Warrington Wolves prop on Oldham’s ambitions for the 2025 season

The prop admitted that he might have to work on his fitness levels to play big minutes in the Championship, but was excited to see where this 18-month deal takes him.

He added: “That’s probably the longest I’ve played in a while, actually, so it was good to get the cobwebs out and build some combinations with the lads.

“Obviously, I’ve only trained once and then played, so I just want to build from this.”

However, Musgrove was very complimentary of the Oldham fans, who are gunning for promotion to Super League in 2025.

He finished: “It’s only going to get better. I could hear the fans, I don’t know if there was a chant or something for me.

“I love it, the fans are passionate, and they want to see the club do well.

“They have big aspirations for the club, so I’m happy to be here and be on board and enjoy the ride.”
