Progress made on Rob Burrow Centre for MND Centre on first anniversary of his death

The Rob Burrow Centre for MND in Leeds is set to open in late summer, and there has been major progress shared on the first anniversary of the Leeds Rhinos legend’s death.

Burrow lost his battle with motor neurone disease on 2nd June 2024, and in his honour, rugby league has helped to campaign for more research and funding into the disease.

The treatment centre at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds has announced that the exterior of the building is watertight and once the glass is installed, work can begin on the interiors.

Lindsey Burrow visits the Rob Burrow Centre for MND following major progress

Rob’s wife, Lindsey, has been instrumental in fundraising and raising awareness for MND, and she attended the site to commemorate this milestone.

Speaking to the BBC on a visit to the site, Lindsey Burrow said: “Ultimately, that’s what Rob wanted to do, to help other families.”

“To have this centre for us as a family, as somewhere we can come to remember Rob and to be able to share that with other families that are in the same situation that we’ve been in, is incredibly special.”

“Rob would be incredibly proud, he was so humbled. To have this centre, to have the marathon, it’s just part of Rob’s legacy and the amazing work that he’s done for the MND community.

“He was the face of the MND community in the most difficult of circumstances, but to have this, I think it really gives people hope.”

It was only a fortnight ago that a burglary on the site occurred, with a large amount of copper being stolen from the attempted break-in, so any positive updates are always welcome.

£6.8 million was raised to build the centre back in December 2024, but Lindsey, Kevin Sinfield and the rest of the rugby league community continue to fundraise for additional support, treatment and research for those diagnosed with MND and their loved ones.

Sinfield’s next challenge is another seven ultra marathons in seven days in honour of Rob, and having raised £10 million already, he will be hoping to contribute even more fundraising money towards a cause that matters to us all.
