The manager of ex-St Helens playmaker Lewis Dodd has spoken on where South Sydney Rabbitohs stand on the half following his tough NRL start.
Signed by the Bunnies last May for the 2025 season, Dodd arrived with plenty of fanfare but his path to playing time was quickly shut down before the season even started.
Both Jayden Sullivan and Jamie Humphreys were added in the off-season and Dodd has fallen behind both men in the pecking order with former Saint James Graham recently claiming that the ‘writing is on the wall’ in regards to Dodd’s time at Souths.
Labelling him as “basically fifth or sixth choice half-back”, Graham argued: “I think his management really need to look at who needs a seven. I don’t want to see him leave the NRL.”
Dodd’s management have now spoken out though to iterate South Sydney Rabbitohs’ stance and also that of the player following a meeting last week.
Lewis Dodd’s NRL future assessed
Manager Peter Menicou has told The Daily Telegraph that Dodd’s position with Souths is stable, insisting that the Bunnies haven’t urged the Englishman to look for another club.
“For the moment, Souths are ok,” Menicou explained to the Telegraph.
“If they do get to a position where they’d want us to look around, they said they’d let us know. But that’s not the case at the moment.
“He’s had a lot of injuries and is overdue for a bit of a break.”
Dodd has played just three times in the NRL with his debut coming after several weeks of near misses, whilst his last appearance for the Bunnies came on May 3rd in Round Nine.
Even during the first State of Origin game, those Souths players selected to represent their states backed up meaning Dodd didn’t come into the equation.
Ahead of this week’s second Origin clash, Dodd has been named in the reserves with Jamie Humphreys and Jayden Sullivan getting the starts in the halves.
Menicou added: “He’ll be trying his hardest. He wants to play NRL and he’ll be giving it his best shot.”
Dodd is contracted until the end of the 2027 season and with wages of a reported $650,000, Souths might struggle to offload him early if he only continues to play in the New South Wales Cup.
