The latest NRL injury news has seen confirmation that an English star will miss a significant period of time.
Canberra Raiders have confirmed the news that standout second-rower Matty Nicholson will be on the sidelines for around three months, with the Englishman the latest NRL man to suffer an injury blow.
Nicholson is in his maiden season with the Raiders after joining from Super League side Warrington Wolves with the 21-year-old having made nine appearances in the NRL so far.
He was not named to Canberra’s squad for the Round One game in Las Vegas but he’s starred ever since, scoring two tries on his debut with his first coming just minutes after taking the field.
Nicholson has actually bagged five tries in his nine NRL appearances which makes him one of the most prolific forwards in the competition this season, however, he won’t be scoring any more for the time being after this injury news.
Matty Nicholson latest NRL man dealt bad injury news
Nicholson limped off the field during Canberra’s 32-20 defeat against Canterbury Bulldogs, a game which they had led 20-0.
Initial thoughts were that Nicholson had just suffered an ankle sprain and could be back in action within four weeks, however, that sadly hasn’t been the case.
His NRL side released a statement to confirm his time on the sidelines will actually be far longer with the 21-year-old England international also suffering a break in his leg as well.
In a club statement, they announced: “Canberra Raiders forward Matty Nicholson will undergo surgery today after suffering a syndesmosis injury and fracture to his fibula.
“Nicholson will miss around 12 weeks of action.”
It’s a massive blow for Canberra but also for Nicholson who was in serious contention to establish himself as a starter for Shaun Wane in this year’s Ashes series.
Should he return in August, as expected with a 12-week recovery, then he will be available for the final four rounds and obviously the play-offs.
