NRL legend and former Warrington Wolves man Andrew Johns has urged Toby Sexton to consider a move to Super League.
Sexton’s future is very much up in the air at this point, despite making 14 appearances for Canterbury Bulldogs this season. The half-back has played a key role in ensuring the club have spent most of the campaign at the summit of the NRL ladder, too, with six try assists and two tries coming his way.
However, he’s in the final few months of his deal and with Lachlan Galvin making the switch to Belmore, his spot in the side going forward is uncertain to say the least. As such, there has been speculation about a move before the end of the month and he is currently being shopped about.
However, Johns believes Sexton, who is 24-years old, might be wise to look to Super League for opportunities with Jackson Hastings and Brodie Croft being shining examples of what can be achieved in the Northern Hemisphere.
Andrew Johns urges Toby Sexton to consider Super League
“He goes to Super League for a year, plays there,” said Johns, speaking on Immortal Behaviour.
“You look at Jackson Hastings, look at Brodie Croft, they went over and won the Man of Steel.
“It’s good footy over there, less pressure, they don’t scrutinise as much as you are in the NRL.
“That might be an option for Toby. He’s too good a player not to be signed.”
He added: “I watched Toby closely when he was at the Titans and I always thought there was a player there.
“For whatever reason some take longer to develop, and I think he’s really found his form at the Bulldogs.”
Sexton made 24 appearances over three seasons for Gold Coast Titans before moving onto join the Bulldogs in 2023. Since then he has made 37 outings in blue and white.
