England international Dom Young has been linked with a move back to his former club after being dropped by NRL side Sydney Roosters.
Young started the first seven games of the NRL season for the Roosters, with five tries coming inside the first five rounds. That includes an opening day brace against Brisbane Broncos and a try in the win over champions Penrith Panthers.
However, the winger, who is in his second season with the Roosters, was dropped by Trent Robinson last week ahead of the club’s Anzac Day game against St George Illawarra. Mark Nawaqanitawase was entrusted to play on the wing instead and he got himself a try in the 46-18 win over the Dragons.
As such, barring injury, it seems unlikely that Young will be called back into the side for the NRL’s Magic Round this weekend and his spot in Robinson’s plans certainly looks uncertain. It is a slight surprise to see him being linked with a move away from the Roosters already, though, with the Daily Telegraph suggesting Newcastle Knights could be keeping tabs on the situation in their Saint, Sinner, Shoosh feature.
Dom Young linked with NRL switch
Young spent three seasons with the Knights before moving to the Roosters and the report claims that Adam O’Brien would be more than keen to re-sign him, should he become available. O’Brien is a fan of Young’s and with the winger scoring 43 tries in 51 games for the club, he remains a popular figure at the McDonald Jones Stadium.
The 23-year-old joined the Knights ahead of the 2021 NRL season after making two appearances in Super League as a teenager for Huddersfield Giants.
Of course, any talk of a move is simply speculation at this point, but should Young struggle to regain his spot in the Roosters side, he might find himself contemplating a move away, especially with this autumn’s Ashes series to think about.
Young is expected to be a key member of Shaun Wane’s squad when England take on Australia later this year, but if he finds himself struggling for first grade minutes, his spot in the line-up might just be at risk.
