NRL coach discusses Dom Young’s performance following return to Sydney Roosters side

NRL and England winger Dom Young training

NRL winger Dom Young has had to be patient at the Sydney Roosters since rumours of his departure, but his coach was full of praise for him following his return.

Young hasn’t featured since round seven for the Roosters, missing the last four games, after speculation about his future at the club.

However, with State of Origin next week and a number of Sydney players called up along with injuries to his squad, he was brought back into Trent Robinson’s side and played on the wing alongside Mark Nawaqanitawase, the player who had replaced him in the side initially.

Speaking to Channel Nine post-match, coach Robinson said: “I think Dom plays how he plays. He played really strongly, he set the tone there at the start in how he wanted to carry.

“He and Mark (Nawaqanitawase) were nice to watch out there and created some opportunities, and there were some great finishes from those guys.

“It’s a credit to him, it’s been a tough month for him, and he’s played two really good reserve grade games, and he’s come back in and done the job really well for us.

“It’s a mark of his character to do that. It doesn’t say too much, but it was a real credit to him tonight.”

Young put in a solid performance for the Roosters, making 163 metres in nineteen carries, along with eight tackle breaks and two line breaks.

The future for NRL and England winger Dom Young

Young was reportedly told by Sydney that he was free to leave, but boss Trent Robinson stated that it wasn’t quite the case.

Newcastle Knights had initially agreed to re-sign the winger, but talks fell through after the Roosters were unwilling to pay Young’s wages whilst playing elsewhere.

The 23-year-old is in the second year of a four-year contract at Sydney but was open to a return to the Knights, the club that originally took a chance on him as he moved to the NRL from Huddersfield Giants.

Robinson has always stuck by his player, sharing that he didn’t blame Young for the debacle, and insisted that they had a good relationship.

What’s next for Dom Young? He has to stick it out at the Roosters at least until the end of the season unless another NRL club comes in to sign him and is willing to pay to break his contract.
