NRL chief executive announces resignation midway through Super League negotiations

The clock on a deal between the NRL and Super League may well have been set as chief executive Andrew Abdo has announced that he is resigning and will leave the role on July 15th 2026.

Abdo, who is the CEO of the NRL, will step down from that role to take up the same role at Tennis Australia, however, he’s working for another 51 days to ensure a ‘smooth transition’ and it may well be that 51 days is the new deadline for a deal to be done with Super League.

The NRL confirmed the news of Abdo’s impending departure and their statement made no reference to the ongoing dealings with the RFL, RL Commercial and Super League, however, given Abdo’s involvement in talks those working on the deal in the northern hemisphere have built up a connection with the outgoing NRL CEO.

Peter V’landys, the head of the Australian Rugby League Commission and someone else who is heavily involved in negotiations, has been appointed to an executive NRL role until a new CEO is appointed, however, Abdo’s will obviously impact negotiations.

NRL CEO resigns with Peter V’landys taking key interim role

Whilst the date of July 15th marks Abdo’s exit, it perhaps has been a date that those in the RFL have been working towards as both Abdo and V’landys have made it clear that they were negotiating NRL broadcast deals with a summer deadline set.

Abdo’s exit now seems to firm that up with the statement from the NRL confirming: “Mr Abdo will remain in the role until 15 July 2026 to ensure a smooth transition and the completion of the upcoming Broadcast negotiations with ARLC Chairman Peter V’landys AM.

“The ARLC has appointed Chairman Peter V’landys in an executive role until a new CEO is in place ensuring continuity and stability for the game and experienced leadership for the key growth opportunities and expansion of the game.”

A key line in that second paragraph is the reference to V’landys’ experience with ‘key growth opportunities and expansion of the game’, which is clearly what a deal with Super League would reflect.

Abdo also spoke on the future of the sport, stating: “The game doesn’t stand still, and it shouldn’t. The game means so much to so many and the future of Rugby League has never been more exciting. I look forward to watching that continued success from the outside.”

He said of V’landys: “Peter is a genuine leader and he has backed me from the start. His vision for the future, his loyalty, support, guidance and drive has provided me with both inspiration and confidence.”
