Northern Trains have today unveiled a brand-new livery for one of their trains, as they celebrate and honour the life and work of Leeds Rhinos legend, Rob Burrow.
Burrow, who would have turned 43 this past week, has had his legacy remembered once again, following a stellar playing career, but more importantly his fight with Motor Neurone Disease, something he battled for the final four and a half years of his life.
Alongside former teammate and Rhinos legend Kevin Sinfield the pair have raised millions for the MND community, with funds going towards research, awareness and helping those with the disease and their families.
It was announced in July that the transport company would be dedicating one of their trains to Burrow, and today the new livery has been announced, with Burrow’s wife, Lindsey, father Geoff, and two of his children, Jackson and Maya, in attendance at Castleford train station, Rob’s hometown.
The work features all aspects of Burrow’s life – from playing rugby league for England to his campaigning and charity work. Inside the train, key milestones in Rob’s career as a player are noted, including his eight Grand Final victories and three World Club Challenge wins all of which he won at the Rhinos.
Speaking to Telegraph and Argus at the event, Lindsey said: “We are deeply honoured that Northern has chosen to name a train after Rob. Rob was not only an extraordinary rugby league player, but a devoted husband, father and inspiration to so many.
“Rob’s courage, bravery and tireless advocacy for those living with MND has touched hearts across the nation. By dedicating a train in his memory, this carries forward his legacy and reminds everyone of the power of determination, love and community. Thank you to everyone who continues to support and remember him.”
As well as this week’s unveiling, Northern Trains have also pledged that have agreed a partnership with its staff to raise funds for the MND Association. The Rob Burrow Centre for MND is also due to open next month. Based in Seacroft, Leeds, the centre is a first-of-it’s-kind building that is dedicated to help sufferers of MND. It will provide ample space for patients, and their families and carers, to live the best quality of life possible, supported by a dedicated team of workers.
