Nathan Cayless’ first words as Hull KR head coach as core values and coaching philosophy revealed

Nathan Cayless has been confirmed as the man to take over from Willie Peters at the end of the year with Hull KR confirming a three-year deal for the 48-year-old, who has now spoken and explained his coaching philosophy.

Like Willie Peters, Cayless will arrive at Hull KR having never coached a first-grade side but the Robins won’t worry about that given what Peters has gone on to do.

In fact, Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin confirmed that the club interviewed over 15 coaches worldwide before deciding Cayless was the right man for the job, and fans have now been offered some insight into why as the incoming coach has outlined his coaching philosophy.

A veteran of over 250 NRL games and the ninth-most capped player for New Zealand, who he will work with as an assistant coach at this year’s World Cup, Cayless is a born leader with the former prop being handed the captaincy at Parramatta aged just 21.

Speaking on his appointment, Cayless said: “Hull KR is the right coaching opportunity for me and I am grateful.

“I’ve been coaching Rugby League within NRL systems since 2014, starting in pathways and development, moving through to Head Coach of NSW Cup, NRL assistant coach roles and as an international assistant coach with the New Zealand Kiwis.

“My rugby league coaching philosophy aligns with the hardworking, successful culture that exists at Hull KR.”

Born leader Nathan Cayless speaks on Hull KR appointment

Cayless went on to explain what was discussed by himself and the club’s chief executive Paul Lakin, whilst also outlining what sort of team Hull KR fans could hope to see under his coaching.

The 48-year-old explained: “When CEO Paul Lakin and I first spoke, we connected immediately via our alignment on the vision and philosophies required to produce sustained success on and off the field.

“The club’s clarity in sharing the journey to where it is today was integral to my understanding of the professionalism, structure, and strong leadership within the club.”

As for his coaching style, he said: “Under my leadership as Head Coach, the supporters can expect to see a group of players that continually put the team and club first, chase constant improvement, and execute the fundamentals of the game at the highest of standards consistently.

“My leadership journey began at the age of 21 when I was appointed Captain of the Parramatta Eels NRL team. Throughout my playing career I developed values of honesty, integrity and hard work.

“These values have transferred into my coaching, as they are values of action, do what you say you will do and always do your best no matter what.”

Cayless also added that he was ‘excited for the opportunity to lead this exceptionally talented group’, before sending a message to the club’s fans.

“I’d like the Hull KR supporters to know that I am honoured to become the next Head Coach of their Rugby League Club.

“I’m looking forward to serving the club, its players and wider community, and building on the culture of sustained excellence and success both on and off the field.”
