Morgan Smithies has become the latest standout signing for the Perth Bears with the Englishman inking a huge deal that could see him remain at the club for five years.
The loose forward has signed a three-year deal with the option of a further two seasons as he becomes the fourth Englishman to sign for the Bears, in the aftermath of Leeds Rhinos trio Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki.
As such, the Bears have dubbed that angle of recruitment as the ‘blitz of Britain ’, with Morgan Smithies yet another international to sign with the incoming club.
Morgan Smithies left Wigan Warriors after the 2023 season and he’s had a very strong three years in the NRL with the Englishman proving a consistent performer during his time at Canberra Raiders.
Such performances have led to Perth offering their largest contract yet, a three-year deal with the option of two more years meaning that Smithies could be tied to the Bears until the end of the 2031 season.
Set to turn 26 in November, Smithies is yet to truly enter his prime which makes this an even more impressive signing for the Bears and the ex-Wigan man has now spoken about why he made the switch.

Morgan Smithies signs with Perth Bears
“The opportunity to make history and be a part of the Perth Bears was too good to refuse,” Morgan Smithies admitted.
He also pointed to the fact that a handful of other English players had made the move, adding: “It will be great to reconnect with a few of the lads from back home in Perth. Mal and his staff have assembled a very strong roster and it’s an honour to be a part of it.
“This is a new chapter for my family as well. We are committed to the Perth Bears and it’s an exciting opportunity to build our life in Western Australia.”
Speaking on signing Morgan Smithies, Bears coach Mal Meninga said: “Morgan is a fantastic person who has succeeded at just about every level of the game.
“He’s only 25 years-old and has played nearly 200 games across Super League and the NRL.
“He brings big game experience, a fantastic work ethic and, most important of all, is a selfless teammate.
“I’m delighted Morgan and his family believe in what we are creating in Perth and I have no doubt he will be a big part of this club for many years to come.”
