“Why have I just said that?” – Mikey Lewis discusses post-Grand Final jibe towards Leeds Rhinos star

Hull KR

Mikey Lewis believes that the remark he made towards Leeds Rhinos star Jake Connor after the Grand Final was “embarrassing”.

Lewis had just come back into the sheds after playing a starring role in Hull KR’s Grand Final triumph over Wigan Warriors, where he also won the Rob Burrow Award for Player of the Match.

Footage emerged of the half-back walking past journalists and into the dressing room, and as he entered the sheds it could be heard that he said “Jake Connor who?” as he looked to brag about his achievements.

The pair are two of the best playmakers in the league, and were both in line for an England call-up for the Ashes series – though only Lewis was successful in being picked.

Both Lewis and Connor sat down for an interview on Sky Sports’ The Bench podcast ahead of Hull KR and Leeds’ clash in Las Vegas later this month.

Explaining the viral clip, Lewis said: “In my defence, it looks worse than it was.

“When I walked in, one of the media said something about Jake and the Man of the Steel and me coming off the back of what I’d just won (the Grand Final and MOTM), I just said it in the heat of the moment.

“I feel a little bit embarrassed about it, that is embarrassing.”

Mikey Lewis comments on “Jake Connor who?” jibe towards Leeds Rhinos man

Lewis looks to regret his comment regarding Connor, and knows that the Leeds man will no-doubt now be making a beeline for him when the two next meet.

That will be in the Sin City in round three, in what will see two of the best English half-backs in the world go head-to-head.

Explaining the comment further, Lewis added: “…It’s in the back of his head for the next time we play each other and he gets one over the top of me, he’s coming straight back to me.

“Me and Jake actually get on so you know when you do something and then wonder ‘Why have I just said that?’, that was one of them moments.

“It’s probably worse because he wasn’t playing and he’d beat me to the Man of Steel two nights before.”
