Hull KR star Mikey Lewis has revealed the huge impact that assistant coach Luke Gale has had on his game, whilst also praising in-form teammate Tyrone May.
It’s fair to say that Hull KR took their time to get some consistency going in 2026 with the Robins having a stop-start beginning to the season, losing to new boys York Knights, before becoming World Club Champions, and then crashing back down to earth with their sorry performance in Las Vegas.
Today, Hull KR head to Bradford to seek their fifth consecutive win with the Robins having won those last four by an aggregate scoreline of 170-26, highlighting their growing dominance.
Key to that have been half-back pair Mikey Lewis and Tyrone May and the man who is making them tick is Luke Gale, who Hull KR appointed ahead of the 2026 season.
Speaking to the media ahead of today’s game, Lewis praised Gale’s impact at the club and specifically for what he’s done in terms of improving the 2024 Man of Steel’s game.
“He’s had a massive impact on me,” Lewis exclaimed.
“Galey has been there and done it. We’ve had a couple of battles between each other, which I keep reminding him of. Scoring that hat-trick against him in the Hull derby at Magic is always my favourite, even though we got beat, but it was good to get one over him.
“He’s been fantastic. Just on my kicking game, and just seeing the game from a different side.”

Hull KR star on playing mate’s form and Luke Gale’s coaching
That hasn’t just helped Lewis but all of the spine, according to Lewis: “I feel like he’s been really good for the spine. Me, Tyrone (May), Jez (Litten), Mini (Elliot Minchella), Bill (Leyland), all the spine.
“It’s just the little things, the little details, that we need to keep working on and keep working hard on. He’s been really good.”
Talking more specifically about what elements of his game have improved under Gale, Lewis pointed to his kicking with the ex-Hull FC, Leeds Rhinos, Castleford Tigers and Wakefield Trinity man described as ‘one of the best’ by Lewis.
“If I want to look at things, look at a full-back, look at wingers, what they’re doing, little details like that, I can go to him and we’ll obviously talk about it and show him a video of what they’re doing and how I can even get better. He’s been really good.”
Whilst that has helped Lewis hit some hot form of late, no-one at Hull KR has been in the form that Tyrone May has with Lewis’ playing partner catching the eye of late.
Asked about May, Lewis admitted he was wary of how the pair would click when the ex-NRL man arrived from Catalans, however, it’s fair to say those worries are long gone.
Lewis said: “When he first came, I didn’t know how we’d complement each other as a game. I feel like he’s really grown into the role he plays, steering the ship around, especially this year.
“He’s one of them characters. He’ll just keep quiet and do his business. That’s what you see on the field. He’s been fantastic for us.
“Obviously, having quite a settled spine last year with Arthur (Mourgue) coming in, we went to that next level and it’s just about adding that a little bit further now and keep working out with each of us, keep having those conversations because we both keep each other accountable every week and every day.”
