Mikey Lewis’ decision-making questioned after ‘clumsy and dangerous’ sin bin in Hull KR defeat

Sky Sports pundit Jon Wilkin has questioned Mikey Lewis’ latest sin bin with the Hull KR man now moving to a league-high four yellow cards in 2026.

The Hull KR talisman was sent to the bin in the 70th minute of his side’s 34-28 loss to Warrington Wolves, a game that marked Lewis’ first match back after copping a four-match ban in the away defeat to Warrington.

Lewis was sent to the sin bin in that game for a late hit Ewan Irwin when the teen half was passing but on Tuesday night, he cleaned Irwin out after a kick.

Applying kick pressure, Lewis leapt and saw his legs make contact with Irwin’s, an action that saw him take the Wire man out and ultimately resulted in a sin bin.

Pundit Jon Wilkin wasn’t one to argue with the decision, even adding: “I think it would be a red if he broke his leg. That’s the reality of it.”

He and fellow pundit Sam Tomkins were speaking on Sky Sports after the match, with former England full-back Tomkins labelling the incident as ‘dangerous’, however, he was keen to defend the character of the Hull KR man.

Tomkins said: “This is different to what Mikey Lewis got banned for recently. This is a charge down gone wrong, and he’s lifted a foot up.

“It’s clumsy and it’s dangerous but there’s no malice in this. He’s not going out to injure Ewan Irwin, he’s just been banned for four games for head-butting somebody, which was really, really silly. That’s just clumsy for me, I think.

“Like you say, it’s not piling to Mikey Lewis. He’s got it wrong again, but I don’t think there’s any malice in that. He’s not the kind of person who’s going to go and try and injure another halfback.”

Mikey Lewis making it ‘harder than it needs to be’ for himself

Jon Wilkin would agree though he had to question why exactly Mikey Lewis was making that effort in the first place, particularly the fact that he jumped off the floor.

“He’s certainly not trying to go through Ewan Irwin’s leg but it’s dangerous contact, and it is a yellow card,” he asserted.

“My question is, do you need to put yourself in that situation? Do you need to jump off the floor with your feet first to charge down? I just think those are the questions.

“Mikey Lewis is a star, right? We love watching him. He just needs to tidy himself up a little bit. It’s not a lot. It’s just one play every four weeks where he just loses it.”

There’s now a very realistic chance that Lewis will be banned given the fact he already carries 7.75 penalty points, meaning even a Grade A charge would result in a suspension.

In the eyes of presenter Brian Carney, it was just the latest case of Lewis making matters more difficult for himself.

The Irishman said: “It’s a hard sport to play and he’s making it a little bit harder for himself in games. Harder than it needs to be.”
