The consortium led by former Salford Red Devils player, Mason Caton-Brown has officially taken over the club, after the RFL confirmed earlier today that a phoenix club had been approved.
Him, alongside Malcolm Crompton and Paul Hancock, will take over the club as Directors, as they hope to bring the side back to life, following their liquidation earlier this month.
In his first words since the announcement, Caton-Brown has revealed why he decided to take over the club, and touched on the challenging few weeks the club have ahead of them, as they try to make a fully functioning Championship side, both on and off the field, in less than one month.
“This is for the fans,” he said. “They are the heartbeat of this club. Today’s announcement is the result of countless hours of hard work, honesty, and unity. We’re incredibly proud to bring rugby league back home to Salford. But now the hard work really begins.”
The trio confirmed that preparations for 2026 had already begun, so they are not starting from scratch. They also confirmed that they will be able to play out of the Salford Community Stadium, after concerns that their tenancy there would be taken away by the council.
He added: “The next month will be crucial. We’re asking supporters to stand together with us, to get behind the rebuild, to volunteer, to spread the word, and to help us make sure Salford rises again stronger than ever.”
Thanking everybody who made their consortium a successful one, they also gave a mention to the other two applications of ownership given to the RFL, who forced them to improve and make sure they were the very best they could be going into the new era.
“None of this would have been possible without the generosity and passion of the Salford family,” the trio said in a joint statement. “Your belief kept us all going in such an intense period. Together, we’ve ensured the future of rugby league in this city.”
The consortium confirmed that announcements will be made in the coming weeks, as they prepare for their opening fixture of 2026, a Championship Round One clash against local rivals Oldham on January 17.
They also offered their appreciation to Leigh Leopards owner Derek Beaumont, “for his guidance and experience along the journey and helping get this bid right for everyone.”
