Major sporting event forces change in Super League broadcast schedule with upcoming Hull KR coverage swapped out

A major sporting event has forced a change in the BBC coverage of Super League with an upcoming Hull KR game no longer being aired by the broadcaster.

Hull KR will make the trip to the south of France on Wednesday ahead of their clash with Catalans Dragons on Saturday evening, a game that was initially set to be broadcast by the BBC.

Whilst Sky Sports showcase every Super League game live, with two games per round being ‘exclusive’ and therefore having extended coverage, the BBC’s contract only guarantees 15 games per season.

Many of those were confirmed back in November with the round five clash between Catalans Dragons and Hull KR among those selected, however, the free-to-air broadcaster have now had to drop the game on account of a scheduling clash with the Athletics World Indoor Championships.

Because the 5.30 pm (GMT) kick-off clashes with the athletics, that’s seen the BBC pivot and instead select the Saturday 3:00 pm Super League match.

BBC change Super League schedule

That means Warrington Wolves’ home clash with Castleford Tigers will be aired by the BBC with coverage starting 15 minutes before the kick-off and running all the way until 5:15 pm, allowing for some post-match analysis as well.

Confirmation of the change came from the official Betfred Super League social media channels with a graphic showcasing that the match is available to watch on all of Sky Sports, BBC and Super League+.

The game will be aired on BBC Two and is one of just two games in total next week that will have extended coverage with Sky Sports only selecting one ‘exclusive’ game.

As mentioned above, an ‘exclusive’ pick means extended coverage and Sky Sports typically take two per round but they will only broadcast Friday’s clash between Wakefield Trinity and Leigh Leopards in that matter this week.

That’s because for round six, which coincides with Super League’s 30th birthday, they will have three ‘exclusive’ picks, one on each of Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Those games will feature two fixtures that were played in the first Super League season, Castleford Tigers v Bradford Bulls and Leeds Rhinos v Warrington Wolves on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Sandwiched between those will be the Friday night clash between Hull KR and St Helens, meaning Robins’ fans who can’t see their side on the BBC this week will be able to watch extended coverage on Sky Sports next week.

The Biased Broadcasting Cult coverage is beyond despicable. Last weekend you couldn’t find the cup match on iPlayer until 15 minutes before it started. I’ll skip over my misogynist views on the commentator, but if you put the radio on, delayed the TV a bit, you can synch up the two. Offering coverage of any sport without commentary should be an option for all sports, just the match officials and the crowd would suit me.l

The graphics show mills, pits, etc, except they closed ages ago, there are no active pits, they’re history. The mills are repurposed as housing, arts centres, gyms, warehouses, etc.

But on iPlayer you can find U20 – six nations union matches, audience of a few proud mums and dads?

If not for watching rugby matches live I’d no longer need a TV licence, the BBC output is so poor it’s unwatchable.
