Warrington Wolves versus Wigan Warriors talking points

Wigan’s losing streak continues

After last week’s defeat to Castleford stretched the Warriors’ Super League losing streak to three, defeat tonight meant Wigan have now lost four games in a row in the competition for the first time since the summer of 2021.

With Harry Smith set to miss one more game and Bevan French not likely to return for at least another month, it’s clear that Wigan’s struggles could continue going forward.

Whilst they’ll face Bradford Bulls next week, the fixture list then gets very tough with St Helens in the Challenge Cup before games against three of the current top six and champions Hull KR.

George Williams

After a lightning start to the season, Warrington have been dealt a hammer blow with George Williams now potentially out for the remainder of the season.

An ‘extended period’ was the timeline offered earlier in the week but Sam Burgess spoke before the match to confirm that Williams will undergo surgery in the coming weeks, something that he may well then spend the entirety of the season recovering from.

It’s a major blow that will of course afford an opportunity to Ewan Irwin, as was the case tonight, but it’s a worry for all of Wire, England and obviously Williams. The Warrington captain has previously been confirmed to be departing the club for the NRL at the end of the season, meaning he could well have played his final game for the Wolves.

Injury blow

Wigan’s injury list was added to tonight with winger Liam Marshall leaving the field after just 12 minutes with a hamstring injury that forced quite the reshuffle as Jake Wardle move to the wing, Adam Keighran returned to centre and young loose forward Taylor Kerr moved into the halves.

It meant Wigan had to play with a halves pairing of Farrimond and Kerr, whose experience pales in comparison to Wire’s Marc Sneyd and that did show.

Warrington didn’t come through injury free though as Cai Taylor-Wray picked up an ankle knock after 20 minutes and despite battling on until the 43rd minute, he eventually had to succumb to the injury and limped off.

Josh Thewlis stepped in at full-back brilliantly whilst Albert Hopoate’s shift to the wing produced two tries, one courtesy of makeshift centre James Bentley, however, Wire will be understandably concerned by the injury to Taylor-Wray.

Sneyd hits milstone

With George Williams out for an extended period, Marc Sneyd is set for a long run in the side and tonight proved exactly why he’s the man for the job with his experience blending perfectly with Ewan Irwin’s youth.

Not only did Sneyd control the game with the boot, he also hit a new milestone with the boot as he scored his 50th Super League drop goal with Lee Briers (70) the only man to have scored more.
