Arguably the most iconic rugby league commentary ever has been immortalised in a way that many would never have expected, with Mick Morgan set to become the permanent voice of a lift at Xscape Yorkshire.
Morgan, who represented both England and Yorkshire at rugby league, had a stellar playing career but he’s most notable for his iconic commentary during the 1994 cup final between Wigan Warriors and his beloved Castleford.
Within that commentary came the now iconic line of ‘I can’t spake’, as well as ‘get him walking’ and both those phrases will now be utilised in a lift at Xscape Yorkshire as they celebrate Yorkshire Day.
In one of the most unique celebrations of Yorkshire in quite some time, Morgan has voiced five different phrases to welcome visitors who use the lift at Xscape Yorkshire and whilst it may surprise or even confuse some, fans of rugby league will be able to pick out his iconic voice immediately.
Morgan will be in attendance and a total of 50 limited edition ‘I can’t spake’ scarves will be given away for free between 11 am and 4 pm on Yorkshire Day, which is today (August 1st).
You can hear the five separate audio cues that the lift will utilise at the bottom of the article.

Legendary rugby league commentator Mick Morgan on the ‘best lift in the world’
Jason Warren, Centre Director at Xscape Yorkshire, explained why they had decided to use Morgan to help celebrate Yorkshire Day.
Warren said: “Yorkshire Day is all about celebrating what makes this county special, and for the people of Castleford you won’t find anyone more special and Yorkshire than Mick Morgan.
“His famous cup final commentary truly is one of the best and the phrases have gone on to be heard around the world, shared by generations of sports fans way beyond just those following rugby league.
“We hope Mick’s voice and excerpts from that famous match commentary bring even more joy to people as we immortalise them here in our lift.”
Morgan himself admitted: “I’ve commentated on plenty over the years, but I never thought I’d end up being the voice of a lift!
“It’s a bit of fun for Yorkshire Day, and if it gets people smiling while they’re going between floors then that’s good with me. I can’t spake… but this might just be the best lift in the world.”
For those who cannot attend Xscape Yorkshire, located just off Junction 32 of the M62 and home to a range of activity centres, dining options, and other facilities, then they can listen to the lift audio in the clips below.
