Leigh Sports Village renamed as Leopards owner hails ‘great partnership’

The Leigh Sports Village has been renamed with immediate effect meaning the Leopards’ home play-off game on Friday will christen the new name.

Opened in late 2008, the Leopards have always called the Leigh Sports Village their home and it has always been known as that name, but it’s now to be rebranded to the Progress With Unity Stadium.

That change comes in immediately meaning Friday’s game between Leigh Leopards and Wakefield Trinity will mark the first time the new name is in use.

Progress With Unity is a ten-year plan led by Wigan Council in a bid to create fair opportunities and help communities in the area thrive, with Leigh owner Derek Beaumont explaining that it’s a cause the club identify with.

Confirmation of the change was announced by Wigan Council as a statement read: “The stadium at Leigh Sports Village (LSV) will be renamed the Progress With Unity Stadium, acting as a figurehead for the borough’s new movement for change.”

Leigh Leopards’ stadium lands new name

It’s not just Leigh Leopards who call the stadium home but Manchester United Women, whilst the wider complex that comprises the Sports Village hosts local athletics clubs including Leigh Harriers where Olympic gold medalist Keeley Hodgkinson trains.

Speaking on the name change, Leopards owner Derek Beaumont said: “The Progress With Unity Stadium is a great facility that we’re proud to call our home.

“We’ve been breaking boundaries on the pitch in recent years, and this is a new milestone at Leigh Sports Village. Our partnership working with the council and wider community is stronger than it’s ever been.

“Progress With Unity really aligns with our values as a club, so it’s a great partnership.”

Councillor David Molyneux added: “We believe the new name for the stadium is an appropriate step to promote what we are trying to achieve here in our borough and be a figurehead for our shared values.”
