Leigh Leopards boss makes “spoiled it” admission after Warrington win and gives David Armstrong injury news

Leigh Leopards head coach spoke after his side’s 18-14 win over Warrington Wolves, providing an update on David Armstrong’s injury.

The Leopards scored 18 unanswered points before holding off a possible Warrington comeback to move third in Super League and register their fifth win of the campaign but Leigh boss Adrian Lam wasn’t too happy.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Lam assessed: “We sort of spoiled (it), the first 65 minutes I thought were pretty good and strong but just the last 15 minutes put us under pressure with a couple of silly things.”

Both Toby King and Matty Ashton scored in the final 20 minutes as Warrington threatened a comeback but Leigh’s ability to stay resolute will have surely pleased Lam, particularly given the Leopards were without a number of key players.

Tesi Niu and Umyla Hanley didn’t feature whilst full-back David Armstrong left the field at half-time and didn’t return, something Lam would confirm was precautionary.

Speaking on how his side showed character and managed to grind it out, Lam added: “I think a few of them are carrying niggles from the last two weeks, including David Armstrong who didn’t come back out for the second half.

“There’s a couple of other boys there (with niggles) so we’re just grateful that we’ve got the two points, albeit difficult in that last 15 minutes, but I thought we showed some really good signs during the match.”

On Armstrong, who was seen with a heavily-strapped thigh/groin, the Leigh boss said: “No, he could have come back out in that second half here but just precautionary about it with what’s ahead. It was a player’s call as well in the end there so I’m grateful that we’ve got the two points and he wasn’t a part of that last 40 minutes so there’s plenty gain out of it.”

The win marked their second in a row and they face a favourable trip to Salford next, prompting suggestions that the Leopards are in a ‘good place’, something the Leigh boss would agree with.

Lam responded: “Yeah, I think so. There are eight or nine new faces in the team from last year so it’s going to take some time to come together. The longer time, to be honest, between now and the semi-final of the Challenge Cup, the better so we can get some more combinations and time together as a group.

“There are tough games as well leading into the next month but we sit decent on the table and like you said 80 minutes away from Wembley, so as a coach it’s really great.”
