Leigh Leopards have been successful in contesting the disciplinary charge handed down to star hooker Edwin Ipape, with the Super League star admonished from the Grade B charge he received from the Match Review Panel.
Monday’s Match Review Panel saw ten players charged with Leigh Leopards having two men cited, Ipape and Jack Hughes. The latter was handed a three-match ban for making contact with an injured or potentially injured player, something that several players have been found guilty of this season and that has always been met with the same severe Grade E charge.
As such, Leigh opted not to challenge that charge but they did appeal against the Grade B dangerous contact charge handed down to Edwin Ipape.
It’s been confirmed by the RFL that Leigh were successful at tonight’s Operational Rules Tribunal in challenging that verdict with Ipape having the three penalty points and the fine rescinded.
Whilst Ipape was free to play on Friday night against Hull KR anyway, having the penalty points taken off his record is a big win because the new disciplinary system sees points add up, and those points could have harmed the Leigh Leoaprds man further down the line.
A statement from the RFL confirmed the news, reading: “Leigh Leopards’ Edwin Ipape has successfully appealed a Grade B Dangerous Contact charge.
“The hooker was charged by the match review panel after an incident in Sunday’s win at Bradford Bulls.
“He received three penalty points and a fine but a tribunal this evening found him not guilty.”
