Leigh Leopards star ruled out as Adrian Lam gives updates on Tesi Niu and Umyla Hanley

Leigh Leopards head coach Adrian Lam expects to be without David Armstrong for the next week or two after picking up a thigh injury.

The full-back carried the quad issue into Saturday’s clash with Warrington Wolves and was eventually forced out of the action as he continued to struggle with the issue. As such, he was always going to be a doubt for this week’s game against Salford Red Devils in Super League, but Lam has officially ruled him out.

Armstrong will miss one week of action at least, the head coach has confirmed, but there’s hope that he will be fit enough to take on Warrington Wolves in the Challenge Cup semi-finals next month.

“Davy Armstrong is now out for two weeks with a strain and there’s a couple of other boys that have got niggly problems,” Lam said in his pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

“He got a cork in there and there’s a slight strain/tear in there so it’ll be one or two weeks with that but probably more two. Hopefully he’s back in time for the Challenge Cup.”

Leigh will be without Edwin Ipape this week as the hooker serves a one-match suspension, while Umyla Hanley and Tesi Niu are also sidelined with muscle issues. Hanley has a torn quad and hasn’t featured since earlier this month, while Niu is absent through a pectoral tear.

However, the head coach has high hopes that the pair will be considered fit enough to return in the next week or two, with both now back out on the grass.

“I know that Umyla Hanley and Tesi Niu are back on the field running,” he added. “They should be one or two weeks away as well, hopefully all in time for Catalans and in the worse case the semi-final against Warrington.”
