Leigh Leopards boss talks controlling the game and Ben McNamara’s starring role in win over Huddersfield Giants

Leigh Leopards boss Adrian Lam talks to Sky Sports

Leigh Leopards boss Adrian Lam was complimentary of his side’s performance, despite conceding two tries in the final ten minutes against Huddersfield Giants.

The Leopards were sitting comfortably at 28-6 up going into the final quarter of the game before three Huddersfield tries made it a nervy end to the game.

Head coach Lam thought that they controlled the game for the most part and was proud of the way they stuck in.

Speaking to Sky Sports post-match, he said: “That’ll do, it’s enough. I thought we were dominant for the majority of the game, so there were things I liked about that.

“But rugby league, you get a couple of bits of momentum go against you, you can find the switch to change the game, which it did.

“Up until that point, we were in control, and I’m really proud of them for that.”

He was quick to mention that they’re still working on giving a full eighty-minute performance, but it’s all progress in his eyes.

Considering they dominated for most parts of the game, he thought the scoreline didn’t necessarily reflect their performance.

He added: “There were little bits (of concentration lapses), but it’s what we’ve been working really hard on.

“Until we go for eighty minutes without that, then the scoreboard won’t be so close. I thought a fair indication would’ve been 28-6, but when you stop moving and go to sleep for little parts of the game, it comes back to bite you on the backside.

“That’s what we’re developing as a group, we got caught out on a couple of areas there, but a win’s a win at this point.

“I know we’re building each week with the group we’ve got, and I’m confident that each week, we’ll get better as we go along.”

Leigh Leopards coach talks star turn for Ben McNamara and looks ahead to Wakefield Trinity clash in a fortnight

He was full of praise for player of the match Ben McNamara, who in recent weeks has stepped up in numerous positions when called upon.

The Leigh Leopards boss said: “He was great tonight, he just kept his game really simple and everything that he touched turned to gold really.

“That’s the role that he can play. Last week was a little bit different for him, but we had a conversation, got through the week and supported him to do that tonight.

“He was a big key reason as to why we ended up where we did tonight.”

Now the Leopards have a week off before heading to Wakefield Trinity on Sunday 15th June.

Lam said he’ll give the players some rest, but then it’s back to business with a tough game ahead of them.

He finished: “There will be some downtime, like every other Super League club, but we’ve gone from the Challenge Cup into a five-day turnaround, then another six-day turnaround, so we’ve hardly trained.

“We haven’t had a real chance to dig deep, so we’ll do that over the next couple of days.

“We’ll come back and we’ll train hard leading into Wakefield, which will be hard.”
