Leeds Rhinos v Warrington Wolves verdict as Rhinos run rampant in fifth successive win

Leeds Rhinos side celebrate scoring a try

Man of Steel leader Jake Connor had another big game as Leeds Rhinos walloped weary Warrington Wolves at Headingley today.

Connor scored a try, set up two others and kicked four goals as Leeds completed a fifth successive win to strengthen their hold on third place in Super League.

A week after their Challenge Cup final loss to Hull KR, Warrington, who lost winger Arron Lindop to what is feared to be a serious knee injury, made the Rhinos work hard in the first half, but ran out of steam after the break.

It took Leeds 36 minutes and a series of chances to break the deadlock. Harry Newman was held up over Warrington’s line, Lachie Miller had a touchdown ruled out for a knock-on, and Wolves’ Paul Vaughan also suffered a ‘no try’ call.

Newman thought he had scored from Brodie Croft’s pass, but that was overturned on video evidence for an obstruction, and Warrington finally cracked when Jarrod O’Connor’s pass from acting-half sent Cameron Smith through a huge gap in the defence.

Connor converted and then booted a penalty after the half-time hooter to send Leeds into the sheds 8-0 ahead, but two tries soon after the interval took the game away from Warrington.

Connor’s kick on the last was finished by Smith via Miller, and Brodie Croft went over in the next set to make it 20-0.

Josh Thewlis pulled a try back from a George Williams-Lachlan Fitzgibbon combination, but an error from the restart allowed Tom Holroyd to power in, and Connor then capped off a fine game with a solo try.

The Wolves stuck at it and grabbed a consolation score through Ben Currie, with Marc Sneyd landing his second conversion, but Morgan Gannon plunged over on the final play of the game, and Kallum Watkins celebrated his 400th career game by landing the conversion.

Leeds Rhinos next travel to St Helens on Friday evening, and Warrington Wolves host Huddersfield Giants next Saturday afternoon.
