Hull KR and Warrington Wolves learn disciplinary verdict as Leeds Rhinos forward among three Super League men charged

The Super League disciplinary verdict before the Challenge Cup Final is always a nervy one and the verdict is in with three players charged.

Fortunately for both Hull KR and Warrington Wolves, who will face off under the Wembley arches on Saturday, no players from their sides have been picked up by the Match Review Panel.

It was a quiet week in Super League for the referees in terms of cards with just yellow cards flashed and that lack of cards has been reflected in the disciplinary with just three players charged, including one of those sin binned.

Deon Cross was sent to the sin bin for his high shot on Arthur Mourgue but the St Helens outside back has not been handed a charge, however, teammate Morgan Knowles has.

Knowles has been hit with a Grade A charge of ‘late contact on the kicker’ for his shot on Mikey Lewis in the first half of their game at Craven Park. That takes the loose forward’s penalty points total to two meaning he’s still a long margin away from a ban.

The other two charges both came in Saturday’s West Yorkshire derby between Leeds Rhinos and Wakefield Trinity, a game where the home side held off a fightback to ensure a 22-18 win.

That moved Leeds third in Super League going into the Challenge Cup break but they’ve been pinged with one player charged on the disciplinary account.

James Bentley has been handed a Grade B charge for ‘late contact on the passer’ and that tackle was almost even more costly as it came on fifth tackle in the 78th minute when Wakefield were pushing for a winner.

The late shot on Jay Pitts saw Bentley sent to the sin bin and gave Wakefield a new set of six, from which they almost scored – something which would have been far more costly than the three penalty points the second-rower picks up.

Max Jowitt, who starred for Wakefield in that game, has also been handed a Grade A charge for ‘dangerous contact’ making him the third and final player to be charged by this week’s Super League disciplinary.

Leeds Rhinos’ Keenan Palasia was not charged despite calls from Kevin Brown that he should have been sin binned.

With no charges for Hull KR or Warrington Wolves, it should mean both teams are at full strength for Wembley with Jared Waerea-Hargreaves set to return after a ban and George Williams coming back from injury.
