Leeds Rhinos have added an option to their outside backs by signing a rugby union winger on trial for one month.
The Rhinos have confirmed that they have brought in 24-year-old rugby union player Jack Metcalf on a month-long trial with the club.
Leeds have rarely changed their first-choice wing pairing of Ryan Hall and Riley Lumb in 2025 but they have recently brought in Elliot Wallis on loan from Huddersfield Giants with the former Hull KR man spending most of his time in the reserves.
That could be the case for Metcalf as well, however, this is a trial as opposed to a signing.
Metcalf was at Newcastle Falcons last season but now returns to his home city to switch codes and try his hand at rugby league, something that very few have done successfully despite plenty having tried.
One thing worth noting is that if Leeds were to sign Metcalf to a deal then he would cost nothing on the salary cap, something which makes rugby union converts very appealing to Super League clubs. Wigan Warriors have recently brought in Christian Wade on a deal until the end of the season with the ex-England international costing nothing on the cap.

The Rhinos announced on Monday evening that they had handed Metcalf a trial with the club taking to social media and their club website to share the news.
Providing information on the 24-year-old, they revealed: “A talented footballer as a youngster, he was an Academy player with Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers, before starting to play Rugby Union at West Park Leeds. He made his senior debut with Leeds Tykes in 2019 and then moved to Sale Sharks, where he scored four tries in his 12 senior appearances before joining Ealing Trailfinders.
“Metcalf scored nine tries in his 12 games for the London club, spending a brief period in Australia with Eastwood RFC before joining Doncaster, where he scored six tries in 12 games during the 2023-24 campaign.”
Leeds Rhinos Sporting Director Ian Blease said, “We are pleased to give Jack an opportunity to join us on trial for a month. In Union, he has played full back, centre and wing and this will be a chance for him to test himself in Rugby League. He is a Leeds-lad and he has settled in well with the group already.”
