Leeds Rhinos off-contract star drops major hint on his Headingley future

Super-sub Sam Lisone has dropped a hint about his Leeds Rhinos future.

Lisone is out of contract at the end of 2025 and, speaking after the front-rower scored two tries in last month’s win at Castleford Tigers, coach Brad Arthur revealed a new deal could be on the table.

The former Samoa international is ever-present in Leeds’ 15 competitive games this year, all as a substitute and has been in barnstorming form during a run of six wins from seven games which has lifted the Rhinos to third in Betfred Super League.

“I love it here, there’s no other team I’d want to play for, to be honest,” Lisone said of the club he joined from Gold Coast Titans ahead of the 2023 season.

But Lisone’s partner Georgia Hale, who had a brief spell with Leeds two years ago, plays in the NRL Women’s competition in Australia and he admitted it’s not a straightforward decision.

“There’s a lot of things to weigh up for me, which I think everyone knows with my partner away,” he stressed. “We will see, when the time’s right it will resolve itself.”

Along with fellow pack man Mikolaj Oledzki, Lisone played his 200th career game when Rhinos beat Wakefield Trinity during their annual motor neurone disease awareness fixture last Saturday.

The game was played two days before the first anniversary of Rhinos legend Rob Burrow’s death and Lisone reflected: “Wakefield are a quality side and they came to play.

“It was a great effort from the boys and I was really stoked they could give me and Mik a good day.

“Two hundred games – I still remember my first game and I am very grateful to the club for allowing me to achieve that – and to my past coaches and teams too.

“The game [against Wakefield] was special, for Rob. To be part of it and to win like that – gritty, right at the end – was a good feeling.”

Leeds Rhinos return to action against Warrington Wolves at AMT Headingley on Saturday, June 14 and Lisone accepts they will need to up their game after almost being pipped last time out.

They led 22-6 at half-time against Wakefield, but were put under huge pressure after the break before hanging on for a 22-18 success.

“The first 40 was good from the boys, we started really well,” Lisone said. “The second 40, I’ll put my hand up – I was in that.

“We’ll have a look at the tape, but we have got to work on that. Wakefield are a quality side and some key players stood up, but we dug deep to get the win and I am happy we could for our fans and for Rob.

“The theme all week was doing it for Rob, so when it got tough, the boys stood up and we were happy to get the two points and four [wins] on the trot.”
