Leeds Rhinos legend honoured as Rob Burrow centre for MND officially opened

The Rob Burrow Centre for MND has officially opened his doors today, as the Leeds Rhinos legend’s legacy continues to live on.

In a plan that has taken over five years to come to fruition, the hard work of Burrow, Kevin Sinfield and everyone involved in building and fundraising for the centre has finally paid off.

Located in Seacroft, Leeds, the centre will become a place for MND sufferers to go and enter a welcoming and calm environment that will be used as a beacon of hope for those living with the disease.

A huge £6.8 million has been raised for this centre to come to life, with Sinfield’s fundraising and the work of the Leeds Hospitals Charity going a long way in making that happen.

The centre is another of the many ways Burrow, who revealed he had the disease in December of 2019 and raised millions alongside his former teammate for MND-related charities, will be remembered. Northern Trains have dedicated one of their trains to Burrow, with the cross-code 745 game another way his memory will live on.

Dr Agam Jung, who worked with Rob half a decade ago to come up with the idea of the centre, spoke on how proud she is to be able to finally open the building, and revealed how fitting it is for Burrow to be remembered in this way.

She said: “It has been five years since the germination of the idea to build this centre – a legacy of Rob’s strength, his family’s support, and the compassion of an entire community. I’m so grateful to so many people who have worked together to make this dream a reality.

“I was very pleased when Rob fully embraced the Leeds MND Service ethos of ‘Living in the Now’. He wanted to leave a legacy for people to be able to do so, and this has spread across the MND community. All of us who work in this incredible new centre will focus on providing the very best care and community for families and patients to do just that.”

Craige Richardson, Director of Estates and Facilities at Leeds Teaching Hospitals, added: “Just 18 months ago we placed spades in the ground here, and now this state-of-the-art centre is complete, created with Rob’s vision to make MND care better for not just every patient living with MND, but for those families and carers who support them.

“This has been an exceptional effort from so many people, and I want to extend my thanks to everyone who has played a role, from the many contractors and suppliers, to the patients and their families, to all those who fundraised, and to Rob’s family, who have been such an important part of this journey every step of the way.

Serious About Rugby League has launched a brand new podcast which can be watched in full on our YouTube channel here.

“We hope that this new space will provide the hope and light that Rob envisioned, and that we will set standards of care, education, research and community that will then be replicated far and wide.”
