One Leeds Rhinos man has provided an injury update and ruled on the future of Brad Arthur at the Headingley club, declaring that he would “love” the Australian to stay.
The question of whether Brad Arthur will be Leeds Rhinos’ coach in 2026 or not is among the biggest talking points in rugby league with the Australian having clearly stated his intent to return to the NRL at some point, whilst underlining how much he is enjoying his current role.
Arthur initially joined Leeds on a 10-game deal to see out the 2024 season but he signed a one-year deal for 2025, however, he is yet to commit for 2026.
Reports Down Under have suggested he’s close to becoming head coach of the NRL’s soon-to-be 18th team, Perth Bears, with the club expected to enter in 2027 and therefore be built throughout 2026.
Arthur responded to those reports last week insisting he’s still Leeds Rhinos’ head coach but many believe he won’t be in 2026, something that will disappoint plenty of fans and players with one current player calling on the Australian to stay.
“Love him to stay” – Leeds Rhinos man gives Brad Arthur vote of confidence amid injury update
Andy Ackers has stated that he would “love” for Arthur to stay but explained that he understands how difficult it would be being away from family.
“I’d love Brad to stay but you can understand and he’s made it clear that he does miss his boys,” the hooker said when appearing as a guest on Sky Sports’ The Bench podcast.
“You’ve got to understand where he’s coming from but for now, he’s the Leeds Rhinos coach and he’s doing a great job and the lads absolutely love him.”
When asked what it is that those at Leeds love so much about their head coach, Ackers explained the simplicity that Arthur brings as he again underlined his wish for him to stay beyond 2025.
He explained: “You know where you stand with him, he’s a great guy and great coach and I’d love him to stay.
“I just think how hard-working he is. He’s not a coach who plays mind games, he puts it in black and white and that gives everyone so much accountability. That’s what the lads at Leeds have been asking for for however long.”
Ackers, who is currently out injured with a hamstring injury, also gave a positive update for when he could return.
“I’m ahead of schedule so probably another three weeks or so,” the England international revealed, adding that he could be set to return soon: “I’m hoping so with the way the recovery is going.”
