Leeds Rhinos hammered Hull KR to secure a monstrous victory in Las Vegas with the Robins now rooted to the bottom of Super League.
The Robins’ World Club Challenge win over Brisbane Broncos quickly became a distant memory with Leeds scoring ten tries to win 58-6 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
It was reminiscent of the way that Wigan Warriors dominated Warrington Wolves last year, however, this was arguably more of a shock given that Hull KR had only conceded more than 40 twice in the Willie Peters’ era with one of those examples coming when they rested starters.
A Joe Burgess consolation was the only try that the Robins scored but it was all too late with Leeds having wrapped the game up early. Brad Arthur’s side saw Maika Sivo score four, Brodie Croft and Cooper Jenkins bagged two, whilst Ryan Hall and Keenan Palasia scored one a piece.
Hull KR hammered by Leeds Rhinos
The early exchanges were all about Maika Sivo, with the game ultimately becoming about the Fijian winger. He started off by saving a certain Mikey Lewis 40/20 by scrambling back and batting the ball back into the field of play, allowing Ash Handley to deal with it.
Five minutes later and he was scoring his third try in Super League when Leeds shifted the ball wide left after a broken play and set restart in the middle of the pitch. At that point, there was only one winner with the winger powering over from five yards out.
He’d do the same on the 15-minute mark after an incredible Ash Handley offload but what was more incredible was Sivo’s hand-off on Tom Davies, one of Super League’s best defensive wingers. Questions might be asked as to whether he dropped it but the try stood as Leeds took a swift 12-0 lead.
Leeds’ dominance continued as Jake Connor kicked a monster 40/20, earning the Rhinos a set inside Hull KR’s 10 and they made good use of it with Brodie Croft darting through a shocking defensive line to make it 18-0.
It got worse for Hull KR as they conceded multiple penalties with Keenan Palasia barging over on the back of it but that wasn’t the end of the onslaught. Hull KR managed to force a goal-line drop-out but Maika Sivo pouched the short drop-out and raced 80 metres, with Leeds then spreading it left to right for his wing partner Ryan Hall to score and make it 28-0.
The onslaught continued into the second-half as Brodie Croft bagged his second and Maika Sivo picked up his third to make it 40-0 with over 20 minutes left to play with Hull KR not registering a point until the 65th minute when Joe Burgess scored a consolation in the corner.
That’s all it was though as Maika Sivo soon scored his fourth to add to Hull KR’s humiliation before Cooper Jenkins bagged himself a brace to add even more insult to what was already a terrible night for Hull KR.
It’s a result that will shake up Super League and has left Hull KR at the foot of the table with next week’s clash against Huddersfield Giants seeing the competition’s winless sides face off.
