Leeds Rhinos regained third place in Betfred Super League after a thrilling 22-18 win over Wakefield Trinity today, but boss Brad Arthur was ‘offended’ by a big decision against his team.
The Rhinos led 22-6 at half-time, but were hanging on by a thread at the end after Trinity’s Max Jowitt scored a brace of tries to get the visitors within touching distance with fifteen minutes remaining.
The second of those was confirmed by video official Tom Grant after an on-field signal of a try from referee Chris Kendall, but Arthur felt there was a blatant obstruction in the build-up.
He fumed: “James Bentley can’t get off that man; he runs an outside shoulder. The guys making these decisions need to understand the defensive systems.
“James Bentley can’t get off. I take offence at them saying James Bentley made the initial contact. His movements are to get off, so I take offence to that as a coach.
“We don’t coach our players to do that, to take dives or do that deliberately. We’ve worked hard on our discipline, and the boys need credit for it.”
Bentley was also sin-binned late on in the 77th for a high shot on Wakefield Trinity loose forward Jay Pitts in an eventful game for the second rower.
Leeds Rhinos boss gives Lache Miller update as fullback suffers another injury
Rhinos also suffered an injury scare as full-back Lachie Miller didn’t come out after the break.
Arthur revealed: “About five minutes before half-time, he said his calf was no good. We got him through to half-time, then made the change. He’ll have a scan on Monday. I am super-proud of him for braving it out to half-time.”
The Rhinos now have the week off to assess any injuries, but next face Warrington Wolves at Headingley and the Rhinos should be aiming for another home victory.
