Leeds Rhinos head coach has given a brief but positive assessment on one of the coaches linked with the vacant Castleford Tigers job.
It’s been almost a week since the shock sacking of Danny McGuire, the Leeds Rhinos legend who was axed from Castleford less than a year into his three-year deal.
For many, it was a massive shock to see McGuire axed by the Tigers given the clear lack of quality in their squad and the fact McGuire was brought in on a long deal as a first time head coach.
However, that shock quickly dissipated with questions quickly emerging of who would be the man to take the helm at Castleford Tigers. It was confirmed that Director of Rugby Chris Chester would serve as the interim coach and he fielded questions midweek about the search for a new head coach.
Chester confirmed that there had been “well over 20 applications” with UK-based and overseas coaches in the reckoning, however, he confirmed a lot of NRL-based coaches had applied before stating that NRL experience was desired.
In response to questioning around what traits he wanted in a head coach, Chester said: “Just a development coach that’s got experience in the NRL. I want someone who’s pretty new and pretty fresh. I think an attacking style of rugby as well… I just want a young, hungry coach that’s going to develop the players.”
One man who fits the bill is Ryan Carr, someone who was an assistant to Brad Arthur at Parramatta Eels.

Carr has since been touted by All Out Rugby League as someone high on the shortlist and the former Featherstone Rovers coach could be set for a return to West Yorkshire.
He took Rovers to the Million Pound Game in 2019 but has since been plying his trade in the NRL, having joined Parramatta as their NSW Cup head coach before being appointed as assistant to Brad Arthur.
Carr later joined St George Illawarra where he remains an assistant, however, Arthur was asked about Carr following Leeds’ defeat to St Helens.
“He is a good young coach,” Arthur explained per Love Rugby League as he set about a positive review of the 36-year-old.
“I’ve spent a bit of time with him and he knows his footy.
“It’s up to Cas to work out who their coach is, but Carry is a good lad.”
Chris Chester will lead Castleford today in their clash against Salford Red Devils and continue to do so until a new coach is appointed.
