Leeds Rhinos head coach Brad Arthur has confirmed his interest in the vacant role of England head coach when speaking to the media after his side’s convincing win over Bradford Bulls.
The Rhinos turned it on in the second half as they cruised past Bradford in Cameron Smith’s testimonial, running out as 46-16 winners with half-back Brodie Croft scoring a hat-trick.
A number of injury issues for Leeds were among the hot topics in the post-match presser, however, Brad Arthur declaring his interest for the vacant England job stole the show.
After reports that he was in the running, Arthur was asked outright if he had any interest in the role, to which he swiftly replied: “Yeah,” before going on to underline the fact his priority remains Leeds Rhinos.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time here, coaching at the elite level,” he said.
“I don’t know where it (England head coach hunt) is at or what their process is but I’ve got some interest it.”
He then clarified: “My priority, my main job, my main focus is right here, right now with this team.
“If something opens up there, I’d like to have the conversation.”
The RFL have suggested that the role will become a part-time one, something that Arthur welcomed as he explained that he would not consider the role if it were to affect his work at Headingley.
“I wouldn’t consider it if it did (affect his Leeds job), my number one priority is Leeds Rhinos and this team.”
He was also asked about the prospect of working with other Super League head coaches in the role, something he seemingly would not be keen to do.
The Australian responded: “I haven’t talked too much about it but who knows where it will take us. I’ve only got interest in being a head coach.”
