Brad Arthur has labelled Ethan O’Neill as ‘unfortunate’ after the club confirmed that the forward will leave Leeds Rhinos with immediate effect after signing a permanent deal with Hull FC.
O’Neill, who was born in England when his father Julian played in Super League, joined Leigh Leopards in 2025 but Leeds Rhinos were able to sign him for the 2026 season.
The 27-year-old would make just four competitive appearances for the Rhinos with the most recent of those coming back in March, with Leeds then utilising him in their reserves before sending him on loan to Hull FC.
He’d play five games for the Black and Whites before an injury saw him return to Leeds for treatment, however, a permanent deal was announced on Thursday afternoon just ahead of what would be his sixth game for Hull FC.
Richie Myler spoke of O’Neill’s work rate when Hull FC announced his signing and that was something that Brad Arthur made reference to within Leeds’ own statement confirming his exit.
“Ethan was here on day one of pre-season and, as with all our players who are not in the team at the weekend, he has contributed in training to making sure the team are prepared in the best possible manner for Super League each week,” Arthur said, before explaining how O’Neill was unfortunate during his time at Headingley.
“He has been unfortunate that the fitness of the squad and the consistent emergence of players in his position has limited his opportunities but I am sure he will make the most of his chance with Hull FC.”
Sporting director Ian Blease, who oversaw O’Neill’s signing, added: “On behalf of everyone at the Rhinos, I would like to thank Ethan for his contribution to the group this season.
“He has been a complete professional who has done everything that has been asked of him by the coaching staff.
“Unfortunately, some times in sport things don’t work out how everyone planned and we understand Ethan’s desire to secure his long term future. He leaves with our very best wishes.”
