Leigh Leopards winger Josh Charnley has entered the Super League record books after the 34-year-old scored a hat-trick to overtake Leeds Rhinos’ Ryan Hall as the competition’s all-time top try-scorer.
Ryan Hall broke Danny McGuire’s long-standing record in 2024 as he went past the mythical number of 247 with Hall quickly passing 250 and taking the record to where it stood at 271.
As Hall was breaking the record, Charnley was racing through the low-200s but the Leigh man has now caught up and overtaken Hall’s record to write his name into Super League history.
His tally of 16 tries in 14 games this year puts him second on the season scoring list but it’s the historic all-time record that Charnley will be remembered for.

After Ryan Hall failed to score against Toulouse on Friday night, Charnley was presented with an opportunity to close the gap but he went further as he bagged a first-half brace to equal the record, before then adding one in the second half to break the record.
Charnley made his Super League debut in 2010 out on loan at Hull KR but he’s since scored tries for Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves and Leigh Leopards on his way to Super League history, with the record made all the more incredible when you consider that he made the switch to go and play rugby union as well.
His 2013 tally of 34 remains the most that he has scored in a Super League season but with 16 tries after just 14 games, the veteran could well challenge his own personal record having equalled the competition record.
