Joel Tomkins explains decision to resign as Catalans Dragons’ exit confirmed

Super League side Catalans Dragons have shared a statement confirming the reported exit of head coach Joel Tomkins, who has explained his decision to resign.

Tomkins has not been present at any of Catalans’ last three games and reports emerged before the Dragons’ Challenge Cup tie last Friday that the Englishman had resigned his position in charge of the club.

Assistant coach Ryan Sheridan spoke post-match and addressed those reports, confirming that it was a ‘personal matter’ with the club’s full backing and support behind their former player.

Tomkins had been appointed as head coach of the club late last year having taken interim charge following the exit of Steve McNamara. In 2026, he’d overseen a positive start with a very new squad, however, he’s now stepped away with the club’s latest statement confirming that news.

Les Dracs announced: “Catalans Dragons can confirm the departure of its head coach, Joel Tomkins, who has made the decision to step down from his position for personal reasons.

“We fully respect this decision and would like to sincerely thank him for his commitment, professionalism, and the work accomplished within the club since taking up his role in June 2025.

“Everyone at the club wishes him all the best for the future, both personally and professionally.”

Joel Tomkins addresses Catalans Dragons’ exit

The club confirmed that it has been Ryan Sheridan alongside Micky McIlorum and Mitchell Pearce leading the club, something that is set to continue until a permanent appointment is made.

Speaking on his exit, Tomkins said: “My time at Catalans Dragons over the past 18 months has brought plenty of highs, along with some challenges, all of which I’ve genuinely valued as a rookie head coach. I’ve learned a great deal, both personally and professionally, and I’m grateful for the friendships and experiences I’ve gained along the way. I leave the club a better coach than when I arrived.

“However, living away from my family for a prolonged period has been difficult. After recently spending some time back at home due to personal reasons, I’ve taken the decision to step away and bring my time at the club to a close.

“I would like to thank Bernard and Sebastien for their understanding and support in reaching this decision. I’m very grateful to the players, staff and supporters, and I wish the club every success for the remainder of the season and in future.”

Should not have taken the job in the first place!

A coach would need to commit to living in France, that would mean relocating family. That can be difficult, and not always practical. I did contract work in Ireland, it put tremendous strain on my marriage. I can sympathise with his difficult decision. This should be a factor in Les Draco’s thinking in the selection of their new coach.
