Humble Jack Farrimond gives verdict as Wigan Warriors young gun shines in Challenge Cup Final

Jack Farrimond is the latest Wigan Warriors academy product to write his name into history with the 20-year-old scoring two tries and assisting another as the Cherry and Whites beat holders Hull KR to lift the Challenge Cup trophy.

Farrimond lit up Wembley with his first-half display as his brace helped Wigan to a 40-10 win in the heat, with the youngster a deserving winner of the Lance Todd trophy.

His two tries both showed his running ability, the first from a scrum play as he split Hull KR’s right edge and the second as he split the right, running past his opposition half Mikey Lewis before rounding the full-back to score.

A kick assist for Junior Nsemba’s try followed with Wigan running out to such a comfortable lead that Matt Peet could afford to bring Farrimond off, unleashing Bevan French for the final 20 minutes in his first appearance for the Warriors since March.

Speaking post-match on the BBC, Farrimond admitted: “It’s still not sunk in yet and I don’t think it will for a couple of weeks, it’s a massive occasion.

“The fans, you can hear them in the background, I’m sure. It’s unbelievable, all my family have come out. It’s my brother’s birthday tomorrow as well so I definitely think that’s made him happy as well so yeah, it’s a great occasion, I’m just proud to be a part of it.”

Wigan Warriors half reacts after Challenge Cup glory

With Bevan French back in the squad for this one, it was a surprise to some that Farrimond started and the 20-year-old admitted that at the start of the season he could never have foreseen himself in a position to star in the Challenge Cup Final.

He admitted: “No I didn’t really, it’s always your aspiration at the start of a season, you want to be playing in these big games and luckily for me, unfortunately for Bevan, it’s come for me and I’ve had a run of games together now and I’ve managed to put my best foot forward.

“It’s even better to have Bevan coming on off the bench as well because I knew if I was gassed towards the end, then I’d get a breather.

“It’s definitely something that I didn’t think I’d be a part of and I’m just buzzing.”

It wasn’t just Farrimond’s attacking ability that has shone at Wembley and in recent weeks, but also his defence with his tackle on Maika Sivo a couple of weeks ago still fresh in the memory.

On that side of his game, Farrimond said: “We know the threat that they’ve got down there left with Tyrone and Mikey linking up down there so it was something that we looked at in the week and we picked up on.

“I’m definitely proud of that side of the game but yeah just buzzing to be here and buzzing to get the job done.”
