Jack Ashworth is ticking all the boxes as he attempts to land a new contract at Hull FC. That’s the belief of John Cartwright, who has been more than happy with what he has seen from the forward this season.
Ashworth is in the final year of the two-season contract he signed with the Black and Whites ahead of the 2024 Super League campaign. It’s fair to say his first season with the club was a difficult one, with a series of injuries preventing him from being able to build up a head of steam.
This time around, though, Ashworth has played an important role under Cartwright, stepping off the bench and making an impact, particularly in recent weeks when he has been asked to play in the back-row. The 29-year-old even managed to get his first try in Hull colours last time out, getting himself of a kick through to touch down in the derby.
On the face of it then, he’s certainly going the right way towards earning a new deal and Cartwright agrees with that sentiment.
“It’s a week to week thing,” Cartwright said when asked when we’ll have clarity on the forward’s future. “When you get towards the end of your roster, the numbers in your roster, it’s always hard but Jack is doing everything he possibly can to earn another contract.
“Especially in the last three weeks he’s been really good for us. If he keeps performing like that, they tend to look after themselves, those things.”
Hull FC boss John Cartwright on Jack Ashworth’s chances of starting vs Wigan Warriors
With Ed Chamberlain a doubt at this point to be involved against Wigan Warriors on Sunday, Cartwright could well find himself looking to Ashworth to come into the XIII this week.
Chamberlain, who is already a makeshift back-rower, injured his shoulder against Rovers on Good Friday and with Jed Cartwright, Oliver Holmes, Jordan Lane and Brad Fash ruled out through injury, options are few and far between at second row at present.
Asked if Ashworth could the nod to start this week, the head coach added: “There’s every chance especially if Ed doesn’t play that he’ll come into the side.
“We’re just a little bit short on middles too. Jack has done a good job for us coming off the bench as a middle as well and we just have to weight up what’s best for the team when we who’s available. It’s good to know he can handle that edge spot.”
