Championship Rugby League: Incredible Salford comeback, 100-point win and London’s PNG stars shine again

This week’s Championship Rugby League action brought plenty of talking points, none more so than one club racking up over 100 points in their game.

That side was Batley Bulldogs, who scored 110 points in their thumping of a very depleted North Wales Crusaders. The Welsh outfit have undergone an ownership change in recent weeks after the old club went into liquidation, which has led to a number of players moving away from the club.

Interestingly, and quite impressively, not a single player scored a hat-trick in that game, though eight players crossed for two tries and a further four crossed once.

That game took place on Sunday, but the week’s action actually started on Wednesday, when Doncaster faced Barrow in a re-arranged fixture from earlier in the season. The Raiders came out on top in that game, and they backed it up on Sunday when they defeated Hunslet 36-22.

Friday night saw Newcastle Thunder and Oldham win their respective matches against Goole and Midlands, before two tries from Huddersfield Giants loanee Monty Lumb helped Dewsbury Rams to a 32-6 win over Workington Town.

After being 28-6 down with 25 minutes left on the clock, Salford RLFC produced an incredible comeback against Halifax Panthers, winning 32-28 after a last-minute winner by Castleford loanee Daniel Sarbah.

In another comeback, Rochdale Hornets were 20-6 down at half-time before coming back to win 36-22 over rivals Swinton Lions.

London Broncos kept their unbeaten streak going with a 72-10 win over Sheffield Eagles. Brandon Webster-Mansfield crossed for a hat-trick with Finley Glare, Morea Morea, Luke Smith and Elliot Wallis all grabbing try doubles.

Finally, despite only scoring one try, Whitehaven defeated Keighley Cougars 16-14, with Ciaran Walker kicking a total of six conversions across the afternoon.
