‘I’d die for this club’ – Mikey Lewis gives emotional reaction after Hull KR win World Club Challenge

Hull KR half-back Mikey Lewis gave an emotional interview after his side’s epic World Club Challenge victory over Brisbane Broncos, with the 2024 Man of Steel also recalling his difficult last week.

A week on from giving away the sin bin that swung the momentum and ultimately cost Hull KR, Mikey Lewis was reveling in a World Club Challenge win with the Robins holding off a Brisbane fightback to win 30-24.

After racing to a 30-4 lead, Hull KR conceded four tries with Lewis then failing to find touch from a clearing penalty to set up a nervy final few minutes, however, Willie Peters’ side held on to win their fourth piece of silverware inside 12 months.

Speaking post-match on Sky Sports, Lewis said: “It’s unbelievable. From where he was five years ago, I’ve been on this journey from the beginning, since I was a young boy. Now look at us, thriving.

“Paul Lakin and Neil (Hudgell) built a board for us to succeed. They had a vision and pumped loads of money into it and there’s no reason why we can’t. We’ve got the playing squad and the belief, we could have easily fallen away (after) last week.

“It was a disappointing result and performance but tonight, we couldn’t pass it by. It’s an opportunity we have to take. That’s what we’ve done.”

Hull KR star confirms fine for ‘stupid’ trip

Lewis turned the attention to last week with the playmaker keen to show remorse for his actions, with his trip on Liam Harris something that many deemed inexcusable.

Coach Willie Peters went as far as to say that Lewis had let his team down, with the half revealing conversations he’d had with Peters, as well as confirming that he had been fined.

“It was a stupid thing,” he said of the trip, adding: “I know that.I let my teammates down and I said to Willie, we’ve had honest conversations because that’s the type of relationship we’ve got.

“I paid my price. I’ve been fined and I just said, ‘Less talk, I want to show you boys and build that trust back’. It’s ridiculous what I did. I let the whole club down.

“It’s something that I needed to get over here pretty fast. I’ve got no better way to do it than tonight.”

It was an honest and reflective moment from Lewis, who could have hidden away from that moment and instead basked in the glory of a World Club Challenge win.

He also spoke on his switch to full-back , a forced change after Arthur Mourgue’s injury, with Lewis stating passionately: “I’ll do anything for this team, this club. I’d die for this club. I just love everyone to pieces.”
