Willie Peters highlights two key areas Hull KR must address after Leeds Rhinos’ loss

Hull KR boss Willie Peters speaks to TV crew

Two areas Hull KR need to be better in following their rare 14-8 loss to Leeds Rhinos have been revealed by coach Willie Peters.

The Super League leaders have almost a week to lick their wounds ahead of another huge game at third-placed Leigh Leopards on Saturday and Hull KR boss Peters is looking for an improvement in their discipline and execution.

There were only four penalties in Sunday’s game, but three of them went to Rhinos including one against Jared Waerea-Hargreaves for dissent as he prepared to play-the-ball in front of Hull KR’s posts in the second half.

That allowed Jake Connor to kick Leeds level and Peters admitted that – and his side’s poor finishing in the first half – cost them the game.

“We had some ill discipline there,” the boss admitted. “We gave a penalty away with the ball at 8-6 and they got two points; that was one example and I am sure there’s more bits and pieces among it, but that was the main one.

“That’s the area I wasn’t happy with. I am not sure what was said, but if you give a penalty away with the ball it is never a good thing.

“He’s not happy with it. He owned it and that’s what Jared’s about, he is a man and he will own it, but it’s not ideal and not what we want.”

Hull KR boss calls on team to ice wasted opportunities

It was Hull KR’s second defeat in all competitions this season and the first time they had lost to anyone other than Wigan Warriors in exactly a year.

With Leigh up next – a week after they beat second-placed Wigan – Peters admitted his team need to come up with a positive response.

“When you have a defeat you always want to bounce back,” he stated. “We pride ourselves, if we do have a defeat, on not losing two in a row.

“We will let our actions do the talking, have a positive week at training and work hard again. That’s all we can do during the week and then the main thing is our execution next Saturday.”

The hosts had three certain tries ruled out for forward passes in the opening 40 minutes and Peters said: “I thought we had a lot of opportunities in the first half and if we’d executed a couple of those, the score could have been more [convincing].

“I was very happy with what we did in the first half, except for the execution. That hurt us because we came out slow in the second half and they won a lot of field position and got on top.

“We had opportunities to put ourselves in a stronger position to win the game. If you don’t do that it hurts you, especially in big games like that.”
