“It’s always been my dream”: Hull KR star Mikey Lewis makes bold NRL statement

Hull KR star Mikey Lewis applauds fans

Last season was a whirlwind for Hull KR star Mikey Lewis, winning the Man of Steel award and getting to Old Trafford with his Rovers teammates.

Hull KR’s improvement both on and off the field has allowed Lewis to become one of Super League’s shining stars, especially last season.

However, he might not be in the UK for much longer as he aims to play in the NRL at some point in his career.

Speaking ahead of Wigan Warriors game on The Bench podcast with Jenna Brooks and Jon Wilkin, Lewis also shared his thoughts on keeping his temper during games and the leadership within the club.

Reflecting on last season as well as recent months for him as a person and as a player, he said: “Last year was obviously a massive year for me, picking up that award (Man of Steel) but I’d 100% change it for that Grand Final ring.

“The person I’m becoming is more mature, at least having a think about what I’m doing before I do it. Sometimes, I’m just guilty of just doing it, a bit impulsive.

“These last few months, becoming a dad, I’ve had to change a lot; he’s taken priority now.”

Hull KR star talks boss Willie Peters’ influence on his life and dreams of playing in the NRL

Lewis has given credit to both head coach Willie Peters and captain Elliot Minchella in guiding him into becoming a better player overall, as well as focusing on what he needs to do during a game.

He added: “Because I’m a competitor and I want to win at all times, I let that get the better of me.

“Mini’s a fantastic leader and what Willie’s done for me off the field, he’s teaching me how to keep in the blues as we call it.

“The blue is just keeping nice and calm, it’s just a trigger call for me. When I can feel myself falling over to the red, when there’s a break in play, keeping in that blue zone and going red when I need to.

“You think about the game before, especially a Friday night game. You have all day to think about it, what you’re going to do and what you want to do.

“Sometimes it doesn’t go to plan, sometimes the opposition have a game plan to knock you off.”

The Hull KR halfback admits that he’s living the dream at 23, playing for his hometown club in Super League but admitted there’s an even bigger aim he has as a rugby league player.

He finished: “My dream’s always been to go over there to Australia. When the time comes, it’ll come. I’m not putting any pressure on it.

“I love playing at this club, it’s given me so much on and off the field. I don’t see myself playing at any other club in Super League.

“I just love watching the competition (the NRL), it’s a fantastic league, anyone can beat anyone. The lads who come over here, just the lifestyle, even outside of rugby, it’s totally different to here.”

With talk of potentially a number of clubs keeping tabs on his Hull KR performances, could Lewis be heading Down Under sooner rather than later?
