Hull KR signing suffers season-ending injury

Hull KR sign PNG youngster

Championship hopefuls Oldham have been dealt a major blow with the news that centre Jumah Sambou, who has signed for Hull KR for the 2026 season, will miss the remainder of the season.

The Roughyeds centre will make the switch to Craven Park in 2026 with Hull KR confirming his signing earlier this year and this injury now means Sambou has played his last game for Oldham.

Despite Oldham’s strong start to 2025, it’s been a tough year for Sambou who has only played eight games with his appearance on the weekend his first since the middle of March.

Sambou was handed a seven-game ban back in March for biting with this weekend’s appearance being his first game back since then. In a cruel twist of fate, the 23-year-old picked up his serious hamstring injury and Oldham have now confirmed it requires surgery which will rule him out for the remainder of the year.

The Roughyeds confirmed that a scan showed a “serious tear” on Sambou’s hamstring with the former St Helens man now set to undergo surgery.

After an injury-hampered 2024 season when he only played two games, it’s another horrible blow for Sambou who had shone during the games he did play this year.

Head coach Sean Long spoke on the injury, stating that he was “absolutely devastated” for the centre, in an interview with Roughyeds TV.

Long explained: “He’s come back from that suspension and now he is going to miss the rest of the season and it was an horrific tackle. I feel for Jumah with what he is going through at the moment and I just hope the lads get behind him and the staff will look after him in what is hopefully a speedy recovery.

“He has had a couple of injuries but has come back stronger. He has been in this situation before and we will do everything right to get him back on the field. We will rally around him and make sure he is happy.”

Upon confirmation of his signing for Hull KR, Sambou had said: “It’s a big opportunity for me. I’m excited to be joining the Robins. Having spoke to Willie, I like the direction the club is going in and I want to be part of it.

“Oldham has made me grow a lot as a player and a person. I’m grateful for the club and the town’s support. I plan to end the year on a high there. Next year will be a big step forward and I’m excited for the chance to prove myself at Hull KR.”

The Robins currently have centre Oliver Gildart rehabbing after surgery with the ex-Wigan man set for a four-month recovery timeline.
