Hull KR set to release young forward as Willie Peters explains latest decision

AJ Wallace has been given the chance to put himself in the shop window ahead of an expected exit at the end of the season, Hull KR boss Willie Peters has confirmed.

Wallace has joined up with Championship high flyers Toulouse Olympique for the remainder of the season. It comes after what must have been a frustrating couple of years for the 22-year-old, who still hasn’t made a competitive appearance for the Robins.

He joined the club ahead of the 2024 Super League campaign after shining with Bradford Bulls as a youngster and the hope was that he would be able to kick on and establish himself as a Super League player in the red and white of Hull KR. That hasn’t been the case, with Wallace’s only minutes coming during a number of loans away from Craven Park.

He represented Featherstone Rovers, Whitehaven and Doncaster last season and this year, the switch to Toulouse follows a short stint with Sheffield Eagles.

Game time is what the Jamaica international needs then and he’ll be hoping to get that in the south of France, particularly with his contract at KR coming to end. Wallace hasn’t been offered the chance to extend his time in east Hull and as it stands, he will be leaving the club at the end of the season.

As such, Rovers have sent him out on loan with his career prospects in mind, in the hope that he can earn a new deal for himself either in Toulouse or elsewhere.

Hull KR boss on AJ Wallace’s loan move

“I think it just gives AJ the opportunity to go and play, and put himself in the shop window in terms of other clubs coming in for him,” Peters told the press on Monday afternoon.

“We haven’t re-signed him, so clubs can come in to sign AJ. At this stage, it’s about him playing, developing and getting some game time and seeing where he’s at on the back of that.

“We’ll make an announcement when we speak to AJ and finalise that, but it’s an opportunity to play for another club. Toulouse, I believe, are a strong chance of coming up next year. I’m not sure where that’s at, but so I’ve heard. It gives him the opportunity to play for a club that can potentially go up to Super League as well.”
