Hull KR man Sauaso Sue has opened up on last week’s tribunal after being handed a spitting charge in the aftermath of the Challenge Cup final.
Sue was involved in an incident which was placed on report at Wembley, with Warrington Wolves’ Josh Thewlis accusing the prop of spitting at him. The moment was examined by the Match Review Panel, who felt it worthy of a Grade E charge.
As such, Sue stood in front of a tribunal last week where he had the opportunity to argue his case and make a plea, with the help of club representatives.
And, the forward was successful in proving his innocence, with the Rovers man avoiding a ban, seeing the charge dropped and remaining eligible to play last week Friday against Catalans Dragons.
It was a traumatic week that no doubt soured the 33-year-old’s Challenge Cup celebrations somewhat. However, he was relieved to see the tribunal reach the right decision.
“It was pretty nerve-wracking to be fair,” Sue said about the tribunal when speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday’s clash with Castleford Tigers. “The process took a long time.
“I was happy with the result but I don’t want to be in that position again so I’ll make sure I’m not spitting near people again, or not spitting at all I think is the main takeaway from that.
He continued: “[Neil Hudgell] and his team represented me really well and I’m really grateful for their time and getting me off my charge.”
Asked if he had spoken to anyone in the Warrington camp about the charge, Sue simply replied: “No.”
The Hull KR forward would have been facing a ban of at least six weeks had he been found guilty of spitting at Thewlis, and that would have ruled him out until the end of July at least, with some key games coming up in that time.
However, as it is Sue is free to play and he’ll be looking to help KR extend their lead tat the top of the table this week with a win over the Tigers.
