Hull KR pull off major coup as star man ends contract uncertainty with decision explained

Hull KR

Hull KR have succeeded in securing the services of Tyrone May beyond the end of the Super League in what comes as a major coup. May has penned a two-year contract extension with the Robins and that keeps the half-back at Craven Park until the conclusion of the 2027 season at least.

The deal comes after months of uncertainty around May’s future and KR’s half-back situation with the 28-year-old hinting at a move back to Australia when speaking to Serious About RL in pre-season. Willie Peters outlined his expectations that May would be leaving the club when asked in March, too, with the Samoa international making it clear to the club that he was exploring a way in which he could play with his brothers Taylan and Terrell, who are both at Wests Tigers.

However, Rovers have persuaded the former Penrith Panthers man to stick around and that will come as music to the ears of Robins fans, who have grown attached to the scrum-half. May was one of the heroes of Saturday’s Challenge Cup final win over Warrington Wolves, providing the assist for Tom Davies to touch down in the 77th minute of the game as Arron Lindop failed to deal with his teasing kick.

That game was his 47th in a red and white shirt having joined from Catalans Dragons ahead of the 2024 season, and he has touched down for eight tries in that time.

Tyrone May explains his decision to stay at Hull KR

Speaking to the KR press team, May has opened up on the thought process behind his decision to extend his stay with the Robins.

“It was a tough decision, if I’m being honest,” May told the club after signing. “There was a lot of thought that went into it. But I feel like this is the place where I can thrive the most.

“That’s what it came down to in the end. Winning silverware helped at the weekend and made the decision to stay at Hull KR even easier. ”

On the deal that might well be deemed the final piece of the puzzle for next season, head coach Willie Peters added: “We’re really happy Tyrone has extended. It was important that we let Tyrone make that decision around whether he wanted to go back and play the NRL or play here with us in Super League.

“He’s made the choice to stay here for all the right reasons. He knows that we value him and he values us as a club. He’s a really important member of our team and we’re happy that he’s chosen us for another two years.”
