Hull KR player ratings as standout scores 9/10 in gritty win over Wigan Warriors

Hull KR took on Wigan Warriors in a top of the table Super League clash and the player ratings are now in.

The Robins won 10-6 with their first half performance near perfect, barring a lack of points, but they hung on in the second half and ground out a huge win that all but secures the League Leaders Shield.

Willie Peters had some team news decisions to make ahead of the game after the midweek revelation that Micky McIlorum was the man to have suffered a training injury.

His absence meant Jez Litten started at nine with Bill Leyland playing from the bench whilst the suspended Tyrone May was once again replaced by Arthur Mourgue, meaning Jack Broadbent shifted to full-back.

Second-row James Batchelor was the man trusted to play in the centres once again as Willie Peters trusted his senior players to get the job done.

A win last night means that Hull KR are now six points clear of Wigan Warriors and with a significant points difference advantage, they’ll fancy themselves to secure a second piece of silverware this year.

Hull KR player ratings after Wigan Warriors win

Full-back: Jack Broadbent – 8

Deemed to lose the ball in contact early on and perhaps unlucky for the captain’s challenge not to confirm a rip by Liam Farrell. Break midway through the first-half almost set Joe Burgess up but showed the talent he brings to the role. Another game making massive metres with ball in hand.

Winger: Tom Davies – 8

Reliable as ever under the high ball and making strong metres on the Robins’ early carries out of backfield. Serious contender for an England shirt this autumn.

Centre: Peta Hiku – 7

Biggest hit of the night on Jai Field and it was a crucial one that stopped the full-back in full flow. His quick hands to unleash Kelepi Tanginoa would have been an assist if passed to anyone bar the out-of-position forward.

Centre: James Batchelor – 8

Made some brilliant defensive reads in a role that is notoriously hard to master and not his natural position. No surprise that Willie Peters trusts him to play out of position given you know he’s all effort all the time.

Winger: Joe Burgess – 6

Tackled agonisingly close to the line by Harry Smith who stopped a certain try. His late drop from an Adam Keighran bomb was uncharacteristic and immediately punished as Keighran then scored off the scrum.

Stand-off: Mikey Lewis – 5

Knock on under no pressure midway through the first half before then kicking too long as well as he failed to really seize the game. Add to that handling errors and it was one of Lewis’ less exciting performances of the season, though his kicking game did help manage it.

Half-back: Arthur Mourgue – 8

Took the ball deep into the Wigan line as he set up Dean Hadley for the first try, showcasing a different style of running that he can utilise when in the halves. The Robins biggest threat.

Prop: Sauaso Sue – 7

Powerful runner who helped drain Wigan’s pack with his efforts.

Hooker: Jez Litten – 8

Absolutely everywhere in the first half, Hull KR’s rapid play the ball speed was enhanced by him as he commanded play. Almost latched onto an Arthur Mourgue offload to end the game but couldn’t quite keep hold.

Prop: Jai Whitbread – 6

Gave away an early penalty on Liam Marshall and had an incorrect play the ball later on in a frustrating performance for errors but a strong one for his general work.

Second-row: Dean Hadley – 9

Scored the opening try off the back of a powerful running line and then continued to lead by example in the Hull KR pack.

Second-row: Rhyse Martin – 7

Perfect from the kicking tee and starting to become a really important member of this Hull KR pack.

Loose forward: Elliot Minchella – 8

Helped force Kaide Ellis knock on after 90 seconds which set the tone for the night. Also had more of a role with ball in hand, helping create Hadley’s try.

Interchange: Bill Leyland – N/A

An unused sub.

Interchange: Sam Luckley – 6

Not utilised as much as normal and the Robins missed his offload game as a result of that but did put in a solid stint in the second half.

Interchange: Kelepi Tanginoa – 8

Immediate impact off the bench with his power and punch. Found himself on the wing at one point and broke 40 metres but couldn’t find the pass.

Interchange: Jared Waerea-Hargreaves – 7

Got well into the physical and mental battle but didn’t make an immense impact going forward, however, he’s imperative in helping set the line speed which helped strangle Wigan.
